Why SYRIZA chose to join forces with Independent Greeks

Posted on 2015/01/30 by jd

If not the first two, then the third is the only option…

Q: Why SYRIZA chose to join forces with Independent Greeks
A: Following yesterday’s results, there are 6 political parties other than SYRIZA who entered the Greek parliament: outgoing coalition members New Democracy and PASOK, neo-Nazi Golden Dawn, the communist party of Greece KKE, a recently-formed, so-called centrist party, To Potami, and Independent Greeks. I will not discuss here the possibility that SYRIZA forms a coalition with New Democracy, PASOK or Golden Dawn, as all three are political science-fiction. This leaves us with KKE, To Potami and Independent Greeks.

Sen. McCain kicks out ‘Low Life Scum’ CodePink Protesters out of Kissinger Hearing (VIDEO)

Posted on 2015/01/30 - 2015/01/30 by jd

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-AZ) got heated Thursday when protesters disrupted a hearing featuring the 91-year old Henry Kissinger.
The Code Pink protesters repeatedly yelled “Arrest Henry Kissinger for war crimes!” as he entered the room to speak.
McCain initially asked the Capitol Police for order but the protesters continued as Kissinger, the former secretary of State under President Richard Nixon, sat down at the hearing on global security challenges.
“I’d like to say to my colleagues, and to our distinguished witnesses this morning, that I have been a member of this committee for many years and I have never seen anything as disgraceful and outrageous and despicable as the last demonstration that took place,” McCain said, as the protesters resumed. “You know, you’re going to have to shut up or I’m going to have you arrested.
“If we can’t get the Capitol Hill police in here immediately —get out of here you low life scum,” McCain said as one man was escorted out. “So Henry, I hope you will —Dr. Kissinger, I hope on behalf of all of the members of this committee on both sides of the aisle, in fact on behalf of all my colleagues, I’d like to apologize for allowing such disgraceful behavior towards a man who served this country with the greatest distinction. I apologize profusely.”

Don’t talk about the war.

Posted on 2015/01/29 - 2015/01/29 by jd

“The United States has spent about $65 billion to build Afghanistan’s army and police forces, and until this month the American-led coalition regularly shared details on how the money was being put to use and on the Afghan forces’ progress.

“But as of this month, ask a question as seemingly straightforward as the number of Afghan soldiers and police officers in uniform, and the military coalition offers a singularly unrevealing answer: The information is now considered classified.

“The American outlay for weapons and gear for Afghan forces? Classified. The cost of teaching Afghan soldiers to read and write? Even that is now a secret.
“The military command’s explanation for making the change is that such information could endanger American and Afghan lives, even though the data had been released every quarter over the past six years, and Afghan officials do not consider the information secret.

“But as the Obama administration is seeking to declare the long war in Afghanistan officially over, at least from an American standpoint, the move to classify data about the Afghan forces removes one of the most crucial measures for assessing the accomplishments of the international coalition there. And it raises stark questions about the state of the fight against the Taliban, coming after a year in which the Afghan forces took record-high casualties as they battled heavy militant offensives.”

US Corporations Won’t Have to Pay for Nuclear Disasters in India

Why global capitalism needs an empire to support it.

‘…These corporations–who have the political backing of the US government–have succeeded in getting international conventions to agree that "no one other than operators [not the owners, US corporations] can be held responsible" in the event of a nuclear catastrophe. The suppliers want assurances that these international conventions, and not Indian law, will be applied in the wake of such an event…’

Syriza on Palestine…

Posted on 2015/01/24 - 2015/01/24 by jd

Official documents of SYRIZA as well as calls by the party platform have proposed the end of Greek cooperation with Israel regarding matters of defense of Israeli aggression. During the bombing last summer, party leader Alex Tsipras, wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh, attended a rally that marched on the European Commission Representation offices in Greece and then to the United States Embassy to protest the Israeli army military campaign in the Gaza Strip and unilaterally demanding an end to the brutality in Palestine by Israel, saying that “we cannot remain passive, because if this happens on the other side of the Mediterranean today, it can happen on our own side tomorrow.”

Neoliberal Capitalism Has Nearly Broken Planet Earth

Posted on 2015/01/17 - 2015/01/17 by jd

When can we say the C-word, and after that the S-word?

“It is difficult to overestimate the scale and speed of change. In a single lifetime humanity has become a geological force at the planetary-scale,” said Steffen, who also led the Acceleration study.

The conclusion that the world’s dominant economic model—a globalized form of neoliberal capitalism, largely based on international trade and fueled by extracting and consuming natural resources—is the driving force behind planetary destruction will not come as a shock, but the model’s detailed description of how this has worked since the middle of the 20th century makes a more substantial case than many previous attempts.

“When we first aggregated these datasets, we expected to see major changes but what surprised us was the timing. Almost all graphs show the same pattern. The most dramatic shifts have occurred since 1950. We can say that around 1950 was the start of the Great Acceleration,” says Steffen. “After 1950 we can see that major Earth System changes became directly linked to changes largely related to the global economic system. This is a new phenomenon and indicates that humanity has a new responsibility at a global level for the planet.”

New found diary reveals Jewish suffering during Holocaust in Hungary

Posted on 2015/01/14 by jd

Sixteen notebooks in handwritten English…

Among the thousands of Holocaust diaries, Madi’s is a rare account written in English by a non-Jewish member of a local gentry, the museum said. It is blunt, harsh in parts, compassionate, wistful, sarcastic. It tells the story of an unusual woman, a British-educated, divorced Hungarian doctor who held some negative views about Jews but risked her life to hide a Jewish friend, Irene Lakos, and her friend’s seven-year-old nephew.
The nephew, Alfred Lakos, now 77, who lives in the US in Waleska, Georgia, said recently: “She was a hero, in my book.” His aunt survived, as well, and died in Italy in 1998, he said.

Hungary PM Orbán uses Paris march to demonise immigrants

Posted on 2015/01/12 - 2015/01/12 by jd

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been saying many disturbing things about immigrants (and migrants of all kinds) since his re-election in 2014. But what exactly is he saying today? Again, like in previous quotes, he speaks against immigration itself – not merely the dreaded muslims or other ‘barbarians from the east’ so to speak – but against migration!

Is he also referring to EU migrants in this statement? He could be! One thing is for sure, he would like to build a big fence around Hungary to make it ‘safe’ from outside influences.

“Economic immigration is a bad thing in Europe, it should not be seen as having any benefits, because it only brings trouble and danger to the peoples of Europe".

"Immigration and cultural questions related to that must be discussed in a much more open, honest and straightforward manner than until now. I hope that a composed, calm analysis of the recent events will guide European leaders and Brussels towards a tough policy restricting immigration”, he added.

“While I am PM, Hungary will definitely not become an immigration destination. We don’t want to see significantly sized minorities with different cultural characteristics and backgrounds among us. We want to keep Hungary as Hungary".

‘Hungary as the new English patient’

Posted on 2015/01/05 - 2015/01/11 by jd

If the EU ever gets serious about preventing Hungary’s ‘slide’ we will know when they start cutting EU funds.  This has not happened yet in a serious way, therefore we know the EU does not really care.  And, I would say, that the civil opposition here should stop waiting for the EU to ‘save Hungary.’

‘…Hungary is teetering and trying to balance between getting European funds and earning the title of sovereign and strong country. This is exemplified perfectly by the Fidesz campaign before the European Parliamentary elections, when the only message of the governing party was “respect for Hungary.”…’

Also, the title from this post comes from the linked to article – It has been so long since I have seen The English Patient that I am not sure what the reference is here.  Must watch again in 2015!

Symbolic “tomb” of the ancient god Osiris found in Egypt

Posted on 2015/01/05 - 2015/01/12 by jd

You might think that today’s modern gods are complicated and temperamental, but no….

‘According to ancient Egyptian legend, Osiris was the god of the afterlife and he was murdered by his brother Set, sometimes known as Seth, the god of disorder and chaos. Set shut Osiris in a sarcophagus and threw it in the Nile before the body was discovered by Set’s sister and Osiris’s wife, Isis, the Egyptian goddess of magic….’

happy 9.11 day

Posted on 2014/09/11 - 2015/01/11 by jd

Well well, here we are again, happy 9/11 Day. Another year goes by and now another endless undefined war we are expected to support.

13 years ago we didn’t understand that Al Qaeda was partly a blowback from a previous covert operation a decade before. But today we do know that ISIS/ISIL/IS is partly a blowback from a not very covert war less than a year ago! Even the mainstream media’s acknowledgement of this fact can’t stop Team America from Freedomizing™ the Middle East.

It does not matter that our Dear Leader this time was originally elected on a wave of disgust for the previous illegal war in Iraq – strangely, according the Washington DC logic going these days, the fact that our Dear Leader also received a Nobel Peace Prize only seems to legitimize his wars even more. We all know Orwell is laughing at us, and yet we allow this to happen anyway.

10649961_677915405627418_7287738429501304716_n

Obama’s election in 2008 killed the Antiwar movement just as the 2012 election sucked all the energy out of the American Occupy movement. The threat of next Sarah Palin is always more important to Americans (specifically Democratic voters) than all the thousands who will die in America’s next war.

A lot of people and important stuff died on September 11, 2001 – such as, Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 of this US Constitution. Today it is only footnote for another time when Congress approved or prevented wars. The Nobel Peace Prize winner in the White House doesn’t even ‘consult’ Congress anymore and only requests money (which has already spent anyway).

The American Republic is dead. The Empire is weaker than the Elites themselves understand. Hubris is a powerful and addictive drug. In history, all this has happened before, and all of it will happen again.

Happy 9/11 Day.

—jd

Spencer Ackerman in The Guardian writes: ‘…the White House signaled that Obama already “has the authority he needs to take action” against Isis without congressional approval. Obama said he would welcome congressional support but framed it as optional, save for the authorisations and the $500m he wants to use the US military to train Syrian rebels….’
