Israel Jails Palestinian for Facebook posts

Posted on 2015/05/14 by jd

Notice that the NYT assures us that this is rare.

TEL AVIV, Israel — An Israeli court on Tuesday sentenced a Palestinian for incitement and for supporting a terrorist organization based on Facebook posts that applauded militant attacks, his lawyer said. It was a rare case in which statements on social media were regarded as a crime.

[….] “These posts motivated other Facebook users who shared the inciting contents with their friends and followers, who in turn supported the posts by pressing the “like” button,” the indictment said. “The mere use of this media, as the defendant has done, serves as a severe act, given the extensive circulation of the messages, as well as the ease with which these messages spread.”

Mr. Shalabi’s lawyer, Tariq Bargouth, said the basis for the conviction and punishment never established that Mr. Shalabi’s posts had encouraged any specific militant attack.

Hamdi Aburahma Photos – After Netanyahu was reelected, Palestinians fight back (non-violently)

After Netanyahu was reelected, Palestinians continue the resistance against the Israeli occupation

Palestine, West Bank, 20.3.15,
A group of Palestinian activists joined Bil’in their non violent weekly demonstration carrying posters with messages against the new Israeli government. The Palestinians courageously stood up for the rights of the Palestinian people against the new Zionist government elected earlier this week. They will continue their struggle against the occupation and some of the protesters referred to the elected government as fascist.

As usual, the Israeli army used unnecessary violence against the protesters by using rubber bullets and tear gas.

My only reason to go to ello.

I gave up on ello.co a long time ago – For me it was a short burst of interest in finding a desperately needed alternative to facebook, but then it just felt like another tumblr. And I could neither ‘like’ nor <3 anything. Bruce Sterling

But there is one reason I do go back, that is Bruce Sterling. I am always interested in what he writes, or when he speaks, and what he posts is almost always some how in synch with me.

Who will remembers us, after we erased ourselves?

Posted on 2015/02/13 - 2015/02/13 by jd

Vint Cerf called for the development of “digital vellum” to preserve old software and hardware so that out-of-date files could be recovered no matter how old they are.

“When you think about the quantity of documentation from our daily lives that is captured in digital form, like our interactions by email, people’s tweets, and all of the world wide web, it’s clear that we stand to lose an awful lot of our history,” he said.

“We don’t want our digital lives to fade away. If we want to preserve them, we need to make sure that the digital objects we create today can still be rendered far into the future,” he added.
